On April 21st, my wife went to Taiwan to visit our daughter and son-in law. While she was away I gained a new appreciation for all that she does to make my life functional! She has returned and had a wonderful time with Kristin and Geoff seeing the school where they are working and the countryside of Taiwan. Her being away presented my son, Andrew, and me with the ideal time to do the long overdue main bathroom remodel in our 1928 home. So, by the afternoon of her departure, while I was at work, the majority of the old bathroom was in the yard, including the lathe, plaster, and some framing. (My son is noted for his attacking a project.) In the next couple of days the cast iron tub (in pieces) and hallway linen closet showed up in the yard. Well, as you probably know, that was just the beginning of the project. It is similar to a car restoration, where the disassembly goes rather quickly and then the rest of the steps require a fair amount of time and professional help. We hired the plumbing work which included re-piping the house and water service and are doing the rest ourselves. Andrew is doing most of the labor and I am writing the checks and vacuuming each night. He is able to work mornings and then goes to the UW in the afternoons where he is finishing his degrees in Architecture and Construction Management. It is great having a son that can do the construction work as well as the research and design. It is always pleasing to me to experience how much can be accomplished when a team of people work on a project. As I look over our club activities and projects I see this happening. We have many individuals working together with others in the club getting things done. Olga and George Eadie opened up their home for a potluck for our April activity, Steve Grissom and many of you are leading the preparations for the 2005 NW Meet, Jim Farris gave us the inside scoop on judging at our last meeting and will host our next garage night at his house, Bob Helgeson and Jim Martoza are conducting a poll on 2-way radios, Ana Maria and George Haley are leading our club's work at the Monroe Swap Meet, Bill Barker keeps our web site running (he would like any of you to write script about our club for it), and several of you are writing or contemplating writing a Spotlight article like David White did last month. Each of these contributions of yours "put the wheels on our buggy".
In the Relay with you, Rod
